Liz Baird was inspired by a walk with her dog, a talk with an author
and a glance at the stars to start a national, child-centered movement.
Last year Baird, the director of school programs for the N.C. Museum of
Natural Sciences in Raleigh, met Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the
Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.” The book has become a
call to arms of the environmental education movement, suggesting that children
are suffering from less time playing and exploring outdoors.
