Women on top - Everesters now promote gender equality.
KATHMANDU, Mar 2 (IPS) - Seven young women have started a seemingly commonplace programme of video presentations at schools in this mountainous Himalayan country. The programme’s contents however are unique.
The video describes the achievements of a 10-member, all-women’s team from Nepal, aged 17 - 30, that became, in May 2008, the first ever of its kind to successfully climb the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. An expedition is termed as successful when all team members have been able to ‘summit’ or reach the peak. In this case they were all women.
To its climbers it presents avalanches, crevasses, ferocious winds, sudden storms, deep freeze temperatures and low levels of oxygen. Even when supported by bottled oxygen, climbers experience extreme fatigue, impaired judgment and coordination, headaches, nausea, double vision, and sometimes hallucinations. Expeditions spend weeks, sometimes months, acclimatising, and usually attempt Everest only in May and October, avoiding the winter snows and the summer monsoons.
As a result of the expedition, Everest now sports the Millenium Development Goal (MDG) flag of Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, planted on it by the young women’s team. The team employed women during all stages of the expedition, from co-ordination, to cooks, mule drivers and support staff.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Apr 2 (IPS) - How many men work in day care centres, looking after children? How much paternity leave are men entitled to? How many government programmes to combat domestic violence include violent men themselves as part of the treatment?
The ball is in the court of national governments, and it is up to them to answer these questions, according to participants at an international congress on gender equity. The first global symposium on Engaging Men and Boys to Achieve Gender Equity, being held from Monday, Mar. 30 to Friday, Apr. 3 arose, in fact, out of the deafening official silence on the matter, according to Marcos Nascimento, co-director of the non-governmental Promundo Institute.
Over a decade after agreeing that men's participation is essential for "overcoming gender inequalities," governments do not appear to have fully taken this commitment on board, Nascimento said in an interview with IPS. Nascimento belongs to a network of NGOs that address masculinity from a feminist viewpoint, incorporating a gender perspective. Any such initiative is bound to "have greater scope" if it is backed by public policies, he said.

March 8th, 2009 is International Women's Day. International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. It is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some countries like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. The first IWD was run in 1911.

pictures of you: Images from Iran, is a traveling installation of photographs by artist Tom Loughlin portraying Iranians in their daily lives. The images are printed on life-size translucent silk panels and displayed on a structure resembling traditional Persian architecture, complete with lighting and background sound. As viewers move through the installation they come face to face with Iranian portraits; the translucence of the images provides viewing from both sides and allows viewers to observe others’ reactions to the images at the same time.
Although the installation features images of Iranians, the real point of the show is about Americans’ reactions to these images. Many Americans have strong feelings and intuitions about Iran, and many of their ideas have developed in an environment tainted by ignorance and suspicion. The show is not meant to be a political or religious mouthpiece, but rather an open venue through which Americans can be exposed to Iranians and Persian culture in a non-traditional format that fosters visceral reactions.
“ I want Americans to come face-to-face with their Iranian counterparts in order to recognize our common humanity. I take it as an article of faith that if the American people know in their hearts that Iranians are human beings, our democratic process will infuse that compassion and wisdom into the actions of our government.” - -Tom Loughlin-

Steps for Positive Observation
STEP 1: Recognize
What we are conditioned to experience... Where does the belief come from? Your belief or someone else's belief?
STEP 2: Realize
A positive outlook is a choice... You are always at choice. Example: Are you a smoker or someone who chooses to smoke?
STEP 3: Quantify
The positive and productive potential found within... You are and always have been total potential... Grab it... Grow it!
