old typewritersm.jpgHave you ever considered becoming a screenwriter? As a species, a lot of our core culture, language and attitudes are established and then passed on to other generations through story-telling, music and the arts. How often do you treat yourself by going the movies or to DVD rentals? For some people, the big Hollywood blockbusters are just the ticket. Others delight in the smaller low-budget sleepers. How about short film documentaries? Finally, how many of us go through extended lengths to see every new animated kid’s movie? Regardless of our individual attractions or responses towards a particular genre, we all love the movies.

Consider how much fun it would be if YOU were the insight and inspiration behind the story. How cool would it be to bring an idea or experience to its full fruition? How many of us at some point in our lives have said "Hey, I should  write a book?" Why not go a few steps further and go through the mindset or actual process of bringing in all the elements and make a movie out of it? We already play out numerous “mini-flicks” in our head everyday. Why not go ahead and take them from something abstract to something tangible that others can enjoy? Come on, admit it, there has been at least one movie, TV series or play you have seen that prompted you to say or think “I can do that. I can be the source behind something equally inspiring!”

Go ahead and punch out a script on your laptop. You know the plot. You already have an idea on who the actors should be. You know the setting and timeline. You certainly see, hear and feel the special effects. You may already know the appropriate soundtrack for the film. Yep, you’ve got all the resources. With fingers ready to go and all the elements at hand, you are only one step away from drafting your first manuscript. Then just find a way to make it go live. Do it yourself or be creative and find ways to draw attention to it. Stop being entertained by others and start entertaining a segment of the population.

Do your first rough draft today. Start with a short-film segment. Get a few of them under your belt and then go for the big blockbuster. Consider how many small budget sleepers have hit the circuit and been huge winners (Once…Slumdog Millionaire…The Blair Witch Project). There are some great stories out there. You and your ideas are some of them.

There are plenty of courses, magazines and books out there for you to reference. Maybe start with “Story” by Robert McKee to give you a solid overview, but hey, it’s your script. Go by your rules and play the part. Don’t get bogged down with the logistics; at least not initially. Just get things going. Whether the script gains recognition in the industry or not is irrelevant. Write, direct and produce your own short film. See where it goes.

Take this suggestion literally or figuratively, your choice. Write?

Steps for Positive Observation

STEP 1: Recognize
What we are conditioned to experience... Where does the belief come from?  Your belief or someone else's belief?

STEP 2: Realize
A positive outlook is a choice... You are always at choice.  Example: Are you a smoker or someone who chooses to smoke?

STEP 3: Quantify
The positive and productive potential found within... You are and always have been total potential... Grab it... Grow it!
