Accessing November’s night sky is as easy as glancing upward with
the naked eye, but a cornucopia of celestial treats awaits skywatchers
who make the effort to dig a little deeper.
Two bright lights in the southwestern sky, planets Venus and
Jupiter, are eye-catching at dusk. Early in the month, it’s easy to
tell them apart when one remembers that the brighter one, Venus shining
at a magnitude of minus-4.0, is lower to the right, and Jupiter,
magnitude minus-2.1, is much higher to the left. Venus shifts to the
lower left of Jupiter by month’s end.

MOURA, Portugal, Nov 3 (IPS) - This small
municipality in the south of Portugal is becoming increasingly
well-known for its alternative energy initiatives. The latest is the
Sunflower project, which also involves communities in seven other

The aim of the project is to

The IEE seeks to convert the communities into areas free of
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, where only renewable energies are used.

its greenhouse-gas emissions to meet the requirements of the state’s
landmark Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006.

The $700 billion bailout bill intended to stop the tailspin of the nation's financial sector did something else: It includes federal tax benefits for people who commute by bike. Starting in January, workers who use two-wheelers as their primary transportation mode to get to and from work will be eligible for a $20-a-month, tax-free reimbursement from their employers for bicycle-related expenses. In return, employers will be able to deduct the expense from their federal taxes.

When you first hear the call, high up in the blue, you know it's
something special. Some observers describe it as a high, staccato
"kar-r-o-o-o," others as a lilting rattle. Aldo Leopold referred to it
as "the trumpet in the orchestra of evolution."
Cranes flew over the dinosaurs, and sandhill cranes have been flying
over central North America for at least six million years. During the
past two decades, large flocks of greater sandhill cranes have begun to
pass over Boulder during October and early November.
