November Skywatcher's Guide E-Mail

Article Source: The Daily Camera

Written by - Daniel Zantzinger - November 7th, 2008

Accessing November’s night sky is as easy as glancing upward with the naked eye, but a cornucopia of celestial treats awaits skywatchers who make the effort to dig a little deeper.

Two bright lights in the southwestern sky, planets Venus and Jupiter, are eye-catching at dusk. Early in the month, it’s easy to tell them apart when one remembers that the brighter one, Venus shining at a magnitude of minus-4.0, is lower to the right, and Jupiter, magnitude minus-2.1, is much higher to the left. Venus shifts to the lower left of Jupiter by month’s end.

MOURA, Portugal, Nov 3 (IPS) - This small municipality in the south of Portugal is becoming increasingly well-known for its alternative energy initiatives. The latest is the Sunflower project, which also involves communities in seven other European Union countries.

The aim of the project is to transform communities in Bulgaria, Britain, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain into what the EU’s Intelligent Energy - Europe programme (IEE) calls a "Zero Carbon Community." Although a new climate plan would boost utility bills, some predict it will stimulate the economy.

Los Angeles: California moved ahead this week with plans to slash greenhouse-gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and foster a green economy, even as some business groups questioned the costs in difficult economic times. The $700 billion bailout bill intended to stop the tailspin of the nation's financial sector did something else: It includes federal tax benefits for people who commute by bike.  Starting in January, workers who use two-wheelers as their primary transportation mode to get to and from work will be eligible for a $20-a-month, tax-free reimbursement from their employers for bicycle-related expenses. In return, employers will be able to deduct the expense from their federal taxes.

Written by: Stephen Jones and Ruth Carol Cushman - October 2nd, 2008

When you first hear the call, high up in the blue, you know it's something special. Some observers describe it as a high, staccato "kar-r-o-o-o," others as a lilting rattle. Aldo Leopold referred to it as "the trumpet in the orchestra of evolution."

Cranes flew over the dinosaurs, and sandhill cranes have been flying over central North America for at least six million years. During the past two decades, large flocks of greater sandhill cranes have begun to pass over Boulder during October and early November.

Steps for Positive Observation

STEP 1: Recognize
What we are conditioned to experience... Where does the belief come from?  Your belief or someone else's belief?

STEP 2: Realize
A positive outlook is a choice... You are always at choice.  Example: Are you a smoker or someone who chooses to smoke?

STEP 3: Quantify
The positive and productive potential found within... You are and always have been total potential... Grab it... Grow it!
