America's long
love affair with the automobile has apparently cooled – and the
relationship may have been on the rocks long before gas prices began
breaking records this year. All across the
country, Americans began driving fewer miles on average as far back as
2005, and they may have crested as early as 2002, according to a
national study by the Brookings Institution in Washington.

CLEVELAND — Her injuries were ghastly: no nose, no palate, no way to
eat or breathe normally, a face so hideous that children who saw her
screamed and ran away. From the moment they met this year, Dr. Maria Siemionow knew the
disfigured woman would be the one, the first person in the United
States to receive a face transplant. "Our patient was called names and was humiliated. You need a face to
face the world," said Siemionow, the Cleveland Clinic reconstructive
surgeon who led the operation about two weeks ago.

A federal judge on Monday ordered the state child welfare agency to
improve its efforts at finding permanent homes for 500 children who
have lingered for years in foster care in Fulton and DeKalb counties. Some of these children are older teens, or those with emotional
problems, who tend to be more difficult to place. Many are under the
age of 10 and don’t have severe emotional problems. But all have been
in the system for three or more years.
