Central bank says the long decline for the U.S. economy appears to have ended, although it's likely to remain weak for awhile.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Federal Reserve said Wednesday it appears that the U.S. economy has halted the longest period of decline since the Great Depression, although it cautioned that economic activity is likely to remain weak in the near term. That is the Fed's most bullish assessment of the economy in more than a year, and suggests that a recovery may have started.

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- When economist Dennis Gartman told subscribers of his newsletter in the fall of 2007 that the U.S. was entering a recession, the Dow was at 13,500, and the official government call wouldn't come for another full year.
Now he's ahead of officials and forecasters again. According to Gartman, the U.S. recession that started in December 2007 is done."We saw it happen two weeks ago -- it's over," he said in a recent interview.

S&P 500 Tops 1,000 as Commodities Rise; Treasuries, Dollar Fall
Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks advanced, sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index above 1,000 for the first time since November, and commodities rallied while Treasuries and the dollar fell on speculation the recession is ending.
