Survey says number of people 'definitely' heading to stores increasing to 57 million from 49 million in 2008.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of people shopping on Black Friday is expected to pick up more than 16% this year, according to a survey released Tuesday. A staggering 57 million people said they would "definitely" head to stores on the day after Thanksgiving, up from 49 million in 2008, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation.

A better-than-expected housing market report, a weak dollar and a surge in commodities are pushing the market to new 2009 heights.
The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) gained 133 points, or 1.2%, according to early tallies, closing at a 13-month high. The Dow rose as much as 177 points in the morning, hitting 10,495.61 -- the highest trading level since Oct. 3, 2008.

A new program announced Wednesday, seeks to stem youth violence in Chicago schools by reaching out to students through sports and counseling. It hopes to become a national model.
Under the new initiative, called Becoming A Man – Sports Edition, boys in 15 schools will meet once a week with a BAM counselor for an hour session. They will use discussion, games, role playing, video, and physical exercises to discuss how to take accountability for their actions, develop positive goals, and channel their anger in productive ways, among other things.
