(CNN) -- Amidst the sea of jerseys and bike shorts at New Jersey's City to Shore -- a 150-mile bike ride to benefit multiple sclerosis research -- one unlikely rider stands out.
A tiny 84-year-old woman wears a neat, green turtleneck dress and an embroidered jacket. On her feet is a pair of high-heeled pumps. Her salt-and-pepper hair peeks out from the helmet that indicates she is, in fact, a participant in the bike ride. Her old-fashioned one-speed bicycle is purple, with a large wire basket on the front that carries her belongings and her number for the ride.

His right knee ached because of a ligament strain, and his groin stung because of a hernia diagnosed just last Tuesday, but those were hardly the biggest obstacles Steve Baker overcame to run the Denver Marathon on Sunday.
Thirteen months ago, Baker was paralyzed after diving into a swimming pool and hitting the bottom with his head. Two cervical vertebrae were fractured, requiring emergency spinal fusion surgery. Awakening with no feeling in his arms or legs, and immobilized by a halo brace, Baker was forced to contemplate the prospect of life in a wheelchair.

We runners, by our very nature, are creatures of habit. Anything and everything related to our running – from the shoes we wear, to the food we eat and when we eat it, to the races we run year in and year out – is regulated by routine. Think about it. When was the last time you missed your annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot? Probably the last time you switched shoe brands or failed to spread a tablespoon of peanut butter on half of a bagel some 35 minutes before jumping on the third treadmill from the far window at the gym.The bottom line is that for runners, routine rules. League Earns Overall "B" Grade on Report Card Issued by University's Sport Ethics Institute
A new study found that the NFL has improved its hiring practices to increase diversity. The league received an overall B grade in the report released Thursday by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida. It earned an A- for racial hiring practices and a C on gender hiring practices. Those are the highest grades the NFL has received from the institute over the years. "We are making progress...
