Five female adventure athletes who’ve survived
life-affirming struggles have launched a foundation to grant wishes of other
women who’ve had medical or traumatic setbacks in their lives. Invoking the
name of the Greek goddess of war and wisdom, the group has dubbed its effort
Project Athena.

up, Robin Theryoung loved sports — at recess in elementary school, she
played soccer with the boys and enjoyed every moment. But as she and
her classmates aged, hand-eye coordination became more important, and
she wasn’t able to keep up.

U.S. Olympic Committee and Allstate Announce the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Class of 2008
Chicago, Ill.
– Karch Kiraly, three-time U.S. Olympian in volleyball (1984, 1988 and
1996) and three-time gold medalist, leads the distinguished Class of 2008 that
will be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Presented by Allstate. The
induction ceremony will take place June 19 in Chicago. The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Class
of 2008 is comprised of nine Olympians, one Paralympian, an Olympic Coach,
Veteran, Team and Special Contributor.
Fifteen-time Paralympic medalist John Morgan, USABA athlete, first competed at
the Paralympic Games in 1984 notching five medals. Eight years later, Morgan
tallied eight gold medals and a pair of silver medals setting six world records
and two Paralympic records at the Barcelona
1992 Paralympic Games. Morgan set 14 world records in his swimming career,
including five in the B2 classification and nine in the B1 classification.

The
word "athlete" seems to take on a new definition when you're talking
about ultramarathoners. Dean Karnazes rose to prominence in 2006 by
running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. This year,
he is attempting to complete the world's five major desert foot races
in a single calendar year.

The State Games of America, held every biennium, is a national multi-sport event for amateur athletes of all ages and abilities.
In the wake of a record-breaking 2007 games, the city of Colorado Springs, Colo. has entered a bid to host the 2011 event. The site selection committee will be visiting the city April 21 to 23.
